As we reach May we look to be in a much better position weather wise than this time last year. This means spring planting is on the schedule and we shouldn’t hit the problems experienced in 2018.

FRUIT

Berries are of excellent quality, Dutch redcurrants, Spanish raspberries, Mexican blackberries and South American blueberries are all in stock. We shall see our first home grown hot house strawberries in early May but Dutch or Belgium varieties will be more plentiful. UK outdoor rhubarb is now excellent so fill your boots as the forced English varieties particularly from Wye Valley start to decline in quantity. South American melons will start to dwindle as their season begins to end, however the Spanish season will soon start but watch early prices. As May moves on we shall see early European stoned fruit – Apricots, Nectarines and Peaches being available – always a good time!

VEGETABLES

Main crop potatoes including Wilja and Piper are still with us but prices are high. Early Jersey and Cornish potatoes are about but pricey so probably best to leave for a couple of weeks as the season gathers momentum. It is very much asparagus season so make the most of it to back up the standard green asparagus, purple and white grown locally will be available on request. As the weather warms up purple sprouting suffers so the quality will dwindle. English chantenay carrots, leeks, swede and kales will continue to be excellent and why not try our locally sourced red and white Jerusalem artichokes. Spanish onions will soon be super succeeded by the new season Chilean so keep an eye on prices. Fine beans, mangetout and sugar snaps from Africa should all be good bets for May. Italian and Spanish peas and broad beans will be available to pre order – always a good sign spring is here.

SALAD

The Spanish salad season will slow down in May with the new season Dutch produce taking over. We will see lovely tomatoes of all varieties and lovely bright peppers of all colours to enhance your dishes. Lettuce varieties will slowly change from Spanish to early crop English but as usual will be weather dependent. Hot house produce shouldn’t be affected.
