Why is Purple Sprouting Broccoli a Must Have Addition to your Menu?

Although slightly more expensive at this time of year, many of our customers have been asking us when we will be getting Purple Sprouting Broccoli back in stock.  Where the humble calabrese is still as popular as ever, the purple sprouting broccoli is continuing to rise amongst both Chefs and home cooks as a delicious, nutritious and more attractive alternative.  Purple Sprouting Broccoli has been eaten since the Roman Times, however, it is only really in the last 30 years that it has gained in popularity in the UK.

The mild flavour can be used in a variety of dishes, from pasta to salad or as a side dish to a traditional roast – in-fact anywhere that you would use calabrese, you can substitute for Purple Sprouting Broccoli.  Salty ingredients such as Bacon, Anchovies, Blue Cheese and Parmesan are often paired with Purple Sprouting Broccoli or Chilli and Garlic when roasting it to enhance the sweet and rich flavour, which lends itself perfectly to red meat and game dishes.

Purple Sprouting Broccoli is very nutritious – high levels of vitamin C and vitamin A and full of Calcium, Folic Acid, Iron and Fibre as well as other nutrients – it also has properties which are believed to help to prevent Cancer and build resistance against heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis.
